Team Red Bull/BOSCH podium at CORR season opener
Team Red Bull/BOSCH managed to pull off a second place in Pro-2 and a
fourth in Pro-4 at the CORR season opener in Pomona, CA. It was a full
house with crowded stands and a packed field of over thirty Pro-2’s and
sixteen Pro-4’s. The course was super-technical consisting of tight
turns transitioning from dirt to pavement and back to dirt again, making
vehicle control extremely tricky and passing difficult.
Qualifying Saturday
Steve Barlow started off the weekend rough, breaking his steering arm in
practice, causing him to roll violently in turn three. The Red
Bull/BOSCH crew was able to quickly fix the damaged vehicle and get it
back out for qualifying using their new set of BOSCH power tools. Rick
Johnson’s day went smooth, he managed to come out and dominate
qualifying in the top three.
Racing Saturday
Barlow started mid-pack quickly moving his way up to the fourth place
spot prior to the restart. Just after the mid-race restart Barlow was
stopped due to a broken rear end and was unable to finish. Johnson
faired much better battling for the lead with Renezeder and McCachren,
for the lead ultimately finishing on the podium in 2nd.
Qualifying Sunday
Barlow had a clean run, qualifying 8th, putting him well within striking
distance for a top finish. Johnson also had a clean run finding the
faster lines on the track, qualifying 2nd and putting him right on the
tail of the race leader.
Barlow proved his metal as he battled through the field, coming into
contact with father and son team Curt and Kyle Leduc. Steve kept his
head and drove cleanly as the duo bashed into him on every corner. As if
that was not enough, the exchange caused damaged to Barlow’s right rear
wheel, which resulted in the wheel catching fire four laps from the
finish. Barlow somehow managed to maintain his position finishing 4th in
the Pro-4 class. Johnson suffered mechanical issues as he was chasing
down McCachren, and swapping positions with Renezender when his
over/under drive went, causing him to lose all but first gear. Ever the
champ, Johnson managed to get the wounded vehicle around the course to
ultimately finish 8th keeping him in the running for the points
championship.
Barlow Motorsports/Team Red Bull owner/driver Steve Barlow had this to
say about the weekend of racing: “We have a few mechanical issues that
caused us problems, but overall I am happy with the results. The second
and fourth place finish keep us in the running for the points
championship.”
“The Red Bull/BOSCH Pro-2 worked great. I had a lot of fun battling. It
was some great racing and a great way to start the season.” Stated the
enthusiastic Ricky Johnson.
