Oberg Looks Forward to Second Half of CORR Season
Eagle, River, WI (August 4, 2008) - Mike Oberg and his #80
AMSOIL Kumho Tire Chevrolet Silverado PRO-2 had another tough
weekend, as the team fought through some bad luck during
qualifying, and an ill handling truck during CORR’s first visit to
“The Quarry” in Chula Vista California.
The first of three stops to the idyllic race track, “The Quarry,”
offers a combination of jumps, bumps, high speeds, and huge
elevation changes. This was Oberg Motorsport’s first ever visit to
the fan favorite venue.
Friday evening saw the PRO trucks have a qualifying session, to
determine their starting position for Saturday’s Round Seven
action. Mike was looking to take advantage of a late qualifying
draw, but traffic and then a flat tire prevented the AMSOIL Kumho
Chevy from ripping off a good lap. His fastest time of the session
put him in the sixteenth starting position.
Saturday – Round Seven
Once again, Mike’s starting position really put the team in a
tough spot. The fifteen minute long race, combined with the large
number of competitors, made coming from the back almost
impossible. Mike and his #80 AMSOIL Kumho Chevy didn’t run into
any serious altercations and finished again in ninth place.
Afterwards, Mike noted that his race truck was very unsettled on
the track. He and crew chief, Cory Lambert, made the call for
major changes in the suspension set-up. The support crew from Fox
Racing Shox revalved all the shocks, as the team needed to improve
its qualifying position, to get back to the level of racing the
team is capable of.
Sunday – Round Eight
The practice/qualifying session saw a more comfortable Mike Oberg
on the track. Then, just as Mike was in the midst of a fast
qualifying lap, the truck rolled, ending his chance at a top
starting spot. An earlier lap put Mike in the thirteenth starting
position. The damage to the truck was mostly cosmetic, but the
team only had ninety minutes to get the truck ready, as the
afternoon racing was televised live on NBC Sports.
Mike and the crew got the truck to staging just as the grid headed
out for introductions.
Mike’s starting position put the AMSOIL driver back in the pack at
the start. Mike also had Rob MacCachern starting back, as well.
Mike followed MacCachern the best he could, as the two fought
their way through slower competitors. At the finish, the #80
AMSOIL Kumho Tire Chevy crossed the finish in ninth place
“Qualifying is so important in the CORR series,” remarked Mike
Oberg. “Yesterday we caught some slower trucks in qualifying. The
race officials were going to give us another shot at it, and then
the flat tire prevented us from going back out. Our first real
time on the track was the actual race. Our chassis setup was way
off. We made some wholesale changes, with help from Fox Shox, and
I was much more comfortable on the track today. AMSOIL kept our
engine running at its best. The Kumho tires, the J & H
transmission, our Hawk brake pads, and Fox shocks were all working
well today. It seemed like we were a day behind in our setup. We
still have two more weekends here in Chula Vista, plus one more at
Pomona and Primm. We will have done some testing on our new truck,
so we will be well equipped for the rest of the way. I really am
looking forward to the second half of the season.”
Next race for Oberg Motorsports is August 16-17 for the final
visit of the year at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds, in
Pomona, California.
