Championship Off Road Racing had a thrilling ending to the
2007 season today as the sun was setting over the Las Vegas
International Off Road Raceway in Primm, NV. Carl Renezeder
took home the 2nd Annual Jason Baldwin Memorial Cup Race after
an intense battle with defending Pro 4 Champion Johnny
Greaves. Scott Douglas took home another win in the Pro 4 race
and Rob MacCachren took home a win in the Pro 2 class.
When the field took off
at the start of the Jason Baldwin Memorial Cup race Jerry
Whelchel led the field through turn one. Whelchel went off the
track on turn two of lap one, but was able to stay in the race
falling to the fifth position. MacCachren took over the lead
in his Red Bull number 29. A caution came out on lap 3 from
the amount of dust on the track, the track was watered down
and the race restarted. MacCachren sat in first, Todd LeDuc in
second, Ricky Johnson in third, Greg Adler in fourth and Dan
Vanden Huevel rounded out the top five. When the race went
green MacCachren held his lead over the field. Meanwhile a
battle broke out for the third position between Johnson,
Vanden Huevel and Whelchel. Greaves got turned around in turn
four of lap four. While MacCahren stretched his lead out
front, Johnson and LeDuc battled behind for the second
position. Johnson prevailed passing LeDuc on the straight away
to start lap 6. The competition caution came out on lap eight.
When the race went green it was MacCahren who continued out
front. A caution was brought out after Greaves went into the
side of the catch fence. Greaves was able to stay in the race,
but was pushed to the back of the pack. Once the catch fence
was fixed the race was restarted with MacCahren out front,
Johnson in second, Vanden Huevel in third and Renezeder in
fourth and Adler in fifth. LeDuc was black flagged for leaving
to the pits during a caution. When the race went green
MacCachren took off again stretching out his lead. Renezeder
passed Baldwin for the second position coming out of turn two.
Travis Coyne made a move to the fourth position. Douglas went
out of the race with 8 to go. Huseman went out of the race
with a mechanical failure also with 8 to go. Coyne passed
Baldwin for the third position with 7 to go. MacCacharen spun
in turn two with 6 to go giving Renezeder the lead. MacCachren
passed Renezeder in turn one on lap 14 of 19. MacCachren lost
the lead again to both Renezeder and Baldwin. On lap 17 it was
Renezeder with the lead, Greaves in second and Baldwin in
third. Greaves passed Renezeder in turn two of the final lap.
Renezeder never gave up passing Greaves for the lead in turn
three. In the end it was Renezeder with the win, Greaves in
second and Baldwin rounding out the podium. Renezeder took
home not only the Jason Baldwin Memorial Cup worth $125,000
but also the largest purse prize in off road history of
$66,000. Rob MacCahren in his Red Bull number 29 took home $
6,600 for finishing first among the Pro 2 class.
Rodrigo Ampudia in his
Papas and Beers number 36 led the field to green in the Pro
Lite point’s race today. Kyle LeDuc in his Rockstar Energy
Drink number 99 quickly took the lead going into turn one.
Garit Wallace emerged out of the pack to take the second
position and Ampudia followed behind in the third position.
Wallace got hit by Jeff Huseman going onto the table top on
lap 5 of 14. Ampudia passed LeDuc on lap 6. Marty Hart passed
Leduc for the third position on lap 7. LeDuc went out of the
race with a mechanical failure. Jeff Huseman went out of the
race when he wrecked going through the straight stretch going
into turn two. Hart passed Ampudia with one lap to go. In the
end it was Hart with the win, Naughton taking home second and
Ampudia rounding out the podium. Naughton took home the Bully
Dog Hard Charger Award as well as the 2007 Pro Lite
Championship. Garit Wallace is the Howe Performance Power
Steering Rookie of the Year.
Rick Huseman in his
Fabtech Toyota took the lead at the start of the Lucas Oil
Racing Series Pro 4 Point’s race today only be turned around
going into turn two of lap one. Scott Douglas in his number 7
Amsoil Pro 4 took over the lead with Josh Baldwin in his Toyo
Tires number 86 in second. Defending Pro 4 Champion Johnny
Greaves was close behind in the third position. Greaves in his
Monster Energy Drink/Potawatomi Toyota passed Baldwin going
into turn two on lap 4 of 15. Greaves continued to reel
Douglas who was leading the race. Greaves continued to work
the inside line with little success. The competition caution
came out on lap 9. The race went green and Greaves got on two
wheels coming out of turn two, giving Douglas who was leading
a little breathing room. It wasn’t long before Greaves was
back in the picture working both the inside and outside lines
trying to pass Douglas. Huseman and Baldwin got side by side
coming out of turn three resulting in Huseman wrecking. The
caution was brought out, Huseman was able to return to the
race starting at the back of the pack, and Douglas continued
to lead. Greaves wrecked in turn one and Ed Herbst wrecked in
turn 2 with 2 to go. In the end it was Douglas with the win,
Troy Herbst in second and Baldwin rounding out the podium.
Carl Renezeder took home the 2007 Lucas Oil Pro 4
Championship. Troy Herbst is the Tubeworks Pro 4 Rookie of the
Year.
Jerry Whelchel in his
Monster Energy Drink number 41 took the lead at the start of
the Lucas Oil Racing Series Pro 2 Point’s race today. Rob
MacCachren in his Red Bull number 29 followed behind in second
and defending Pro 2 Champion Carl Renezeder ran in third in
his Lucas Oil number 1. MacCachren took the lead on lap 3. On
lap 4 Ricky Johnson and Todd LeDuc went side by side in turn
three battling for the fourth position, Johnson prevailed.
Renezeder flipped going into turn 2 on lap 7 of 15. The
caution came out and Renezeder was able to return to the race.
The battle of the energy drinks continued out front between
the Red Bull number 29 of MacCachren and the Monster number 41
of Whelchel. Johnson spun around in turn three with 2 to go,
but was able to say in the race. In the end it was MacCachren
with the win, LeDuc in second and Whelchel rounding out the
podium. Jerry Whelchel took home the 2007 Lucas Oil Racing
Series Pro 2 Championship. Alan Pflueger is the Tubeworks Pro
2 Rookie of the Year Award.
