Taylor Racing - CORR Pomona Season Opener Report

Belvidere, IL (April 29, 2008) - Scott Taylor and his #8 Skyjacker Suspensions BFGoodrich Tires Ford F-150 went to Pomona to begin his quest to regain the CORR PRO-2 title. His competition was intense as twenty three of the world’s best PRO-2 qualified for the weekend of racing.

The man made track at The Fairplex  in Pomona, CA was .74 mile long and consisted of jumps, whoops, banked corners, a large table top, and a fairly long section of asphalt. The transition from dirt to pavement and back to dirt really gave the tire manufacturers fits. The BFGoodrich tires really seemed to work well considering the extreme surface conditions.

Saturday – Round One
Practice went as planned. The truck needed a bit more rebound in the rear, so the team quickly made the change and sent the Skyjacker Ford out for qualifying. Scott Taylor brought the #8 home seventh quickest in the twenty three truck field.

The race itself was in one word, fast. The fifteen lap affair did not have a single caution, other than the mandatory yellow. The racing was door to door, with minimal contact. At the flag, the Skyjacker #8 finished seventh.

Afterwards Scott Taylor commented, “We had a clean race, our suspension setup is still not right. The truck was all over the place. Russ and I sat down discussed some spring and shock changes for tomorrow. Also we’re changing the steering gear. With all the test data we have, I’m confident we will get a Top 5 finish tomorrow.”

Sunday – Round Two
The morning practice qualifying sessions were combined. This gave the drivers five laps which were all on the stop watch.  The track official groomed and watered the track giving the later qualifiers a better track to run on. The unseasonably hot weather saw the track temperature at 132 degrees by 10am. Somehow Scott was staged in the middle qualifying group. His qualifying time was second best in his group, but ninth overall.

The race started cleanly, but quickly the race traffic put Scott at a disadvantage with the leaders. Methodically Scott piloted the Skyjacker Ford towards the front. At the flag Taylor Racing crossed the finish line in sixth position.

“Qualifying was the name of the game today,” commented Scott Taylor. “The truck handled much better today. Russ, Mike and the entire team really came through with all the changes we made in the last 24 hours. The truck still has some fine tuning left in it, but we’re really close. Starting back in the pack really made it hard to get to the front. One more lap I would have reached our goal of a Top 5 finish. We still have some work to do, but we will be ready for Primm.”

You can catch all the action from Round Two on NBC Sports, May 25, at 1:30pm eastern.

The next weekend of Championship Off-Road Racing is May 17-18, at the Las Vegas International Off-Road Raceway in Primm, Nevada.
