Hardesty, Noe, Vanderwey, Hall, Holmes, Moss, Nunez, among 2006 SCORE Class point champs
To be honored with Off-Roadsman of the Year Saturday at SCORE Awards Night in Primm, Nev.

LOS ANGELES—Almost starting to sound kind of like a broken record, Las Vegas’ Troy Herbst has solidified his position as the most prolific racer in SCORE desert racing history, claiming a record seventh unlimited Class 1 and a record fourth SCORE Overall point championship after winning Class 1 for a record third straight year in the recent Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.

With four straight Class 1 race wins to end the season, Troy Herbst, at 40 the youngest of the three Herbst brothers, will be officially crowned Saturday night as the 2006 SCORE Desert Series Class 1 and Overall point champion at the annual SCORE Awards Night at the Primm Valley Resort in Primm, Nev. The World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series will honor all of its 2006 SCORE season point champions as well as the 2006 SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year winners and the 2006 Toyota Milestone and Toyota True Grit winners. The evening will start with a reception at 6 p.m. following by dinner and the awards show at 7:30 p.m.

Troy Herbst and his Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford-powered Smithbuilt open-wheel desert race have a SCORE record 21 Class 1 SCORE race wins since 1997.

First to admit his success is a direct result in large part to his team, Troy Herbst had even more help this year. Besides his regular co-driver Larry Roeseler, Hesperia, Calif., Troy had some major help during this year in one race from his older brother Tim Herbst, 43. Tim Herbst drove the majority of the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300, as Troy Herbst continues to recover from the surgery he had this summer on one of his Achilles tendons. Herbst was also selected honorable mention on the 2006 AARWBA All-America motorsports team.

After a rare did-not-finish in the season opener in Laughlin, Troy Herbst and his regular co-driver Roeseler, 49, Hesperia, Calif., won Class 1 in the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March and June’s Tecate SCORE Baja 500, November’s season-ending Tecate and combined with the Primm win, Terrible Herbst Motorsports is once again at the very top of the SCORE desert racing podium.
With one class win and five top six finishes, Las Vegas’ B.J. Baldwin, 27, who has been desert racing since he graduated from Durango High School in Las Vegas in 1997, captured the season point championship in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division for high-tech, 800 horsepower unlimited production trucks in the Baldwin Motorsports No. 97 Chevy Silverado and finished third in the SCORE Overall standings. It was his first SCORE season point championship.

Second in both the SCORE Overall points and in the unlimited Class 1 in 2006, 11 points behind Troy Herbst/Larry Roeseler, are brothers Gary and Mark Weyhrich, Troutdale, Ore. In a Chevy-powered Jimco, while fourth Overall and third in the final Class 1 standings is the team of Richard Boyle, Ridgecrest, Calif./Ron Brant, Oak Hills, Calif., in another Jimco-Chevy.

Fifth overall and winning the Class 1-2/1600 point title is the team of Brian Burgess, Riverside, Calif./Dan Foultz, Chino Hills, Calif., in a SPF-VW.

The Weyhrichs won the season-opener in Laughlin and held the class 1 points lead until finishing second to the Herbsts in Primm. The Weyhrichs also finished second to Herbst/Roeseler at the SCORE Baja 1000.

“This another tremendous team championship for Terrible Herbst Motorsports and even more than any other year, I can say that I couldn’t have done it without my brothers and Larry Roeseler,” said Troy Herbst, “We are a family team with a whole lot of great people who help make it all happen.”

SCORE points are determined by both finishing positions as well the number of starters in each class and Class 1 had the large starting field in three of the first four races with 37 taking three green flag in Laughlin, 35 in San Felipe and 37 in Primm while SCORE Trophy-Truck had 37 starters to lead the field in June’s Tecate SCORE Baja 500 and 31 at the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.

Winning the SCORE Lite class for the third consecutive year and finishing sixth in overall points was the team of Tim Noe/Tom Watson, El Centro, Calif., in a Jimco-VW.

Seven in overall points and second in SCORE Trophy-Truck after a season that included his second career SCORE Trophy-Truck race win in Primm was 2005 SCORE Trophy-Truck season point champion Bob Shepard in a Chevy CK1500.

Las Vegas’ Sammy Ehrenberg teamed with L.J. Kennedy, Orange, Calif., to finish second in Class 1-2/1600 and eighth in overall points in their Jimco-VW.

Ninth in overall points and fourth in Class 1 was the team of Martin Christensen, Escondido, Calif./Dave Mason, Valley Center, Calif., in a Jimco-BMW while 10th overall and fifth in Class 1 was Brian Parkhouse, Bell Gardens, Calif., in yet another of the very popular Jimco-Chevy open-wheelers.

Winning the 2006 SCORE Overall Motorcycle and Class 22 point championship was the American Honda factory team of Robby Bell, Murrieta, Calif./Kendall Norman, Santa Barbara, Calif./Johnny Campbell, San Clemente, Calif., on a Honda CRF450X. In giving Honda its first SCORE overall championship on a CRF450X, it was the first class title for Bell, second for Norman and ninth for the legendary Campbell, who is now the team manager and raced in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 but not the other two Mexican races that comprise the SCORE motorcycle series.

The Bell/Norman/Campbell team won the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 and the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 before clinching their championship with a second place finish in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.

The overall ATV point champions after starting the season slowly with a 10th place finish but ending with two straight Baja wins was the team of Danny Prather, Ramona, Calif./Mike Cafro, Carlsbad, Calif., on a Honda TRX450R.

The only four-wheel vehicle team to finish the year undefeated with five consecutive class wins was brothers Donald Moss, Sacramento, Calif./Kenneth Moss, Marysville, Calif., who won the Class 3 point championship in their sturdy Ford Bronco for the fifth consecutive year.

The other 4-wheel vehicle class points champions with four wins in five races were: Darren Hardesty, Ramona, Calif. (Class 10, AlumiCraft-VW), brothers Nick Vanderwey/Michael Vanderwey, Phoenix/Larry Vanderwey, Litchfield Park, Ariz., (Class 8, GMC Sierra), Eric Fisher, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 9, Garibay-VW) and Eric Solorzano, Tijuana, Mexico (Class 11, VW Sedan).

2006 class champions with three class race wins this season were: John Holmes, Olivenhain, Calif. (Class 7SX, Ford Ranger) and Gus Vildosola Jr., Mexicali, Mexico/Bryan Freeman, Henderson, Nev. (Protruck, Ford F-150),
Ageless wonder Rod Hall, Reno, Nev., captured his 12th SCORE season class point title, winning the Stock Mini class in a Hummer H3.
Another veteran SCORE desert racer George Seeley, Glendale, Calif., had one class win on his way to claiming his ninth SCORE Class 5 season crown in a VW Baja Bug.

Among the other 4-wheel vehicle class point were: Dan Chamlee, Summerland, Calif. (Class 7, Ford Ranger, second class championship), Mike Horner, Mission Viejo, Calif. (Class 7S, Toyota Tacoma, first), Terry Henn,, Walnut, Calif. (Stock Full, Hummer H2, first) and.

Three Mexican drivers earned season championships as well: Eric Fisher, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 9, Garibay-VW, sixth); Eric Solorzano, Tijuana, Mexico (Class 11, VW Sedan, eighth) and Gus Vildosola Jr., Mexicali, Mexico/Bryan Freeman, Henderson, Nev. (Protruck, Ford F-150, first for Vildosola, second for Freeman).

Among the other motorcycle class champions, Jim O’Neal, Chatsworth, Calif., and his two talented teams, won both Class 40 for riders over 40 years old on a Honda XR650R and with another group of riders, won Class 50, for riders over 50, on another Honda XR650R. The double class titles brings O’Neal’s championship total to nine.

Winning Class 30 for riders over 30 was Ron Wilson, Encinitas, Calif., who beat the team led by Brian Pinard, Murrieta, Calif., by just one point. Both teams rode Honda XR650R motorcycles.

The 2006 SCORE Desert Series included the chase for the $50,000 Kartek Off-Road contingency bonus to be awarded to several qualified 2006 SCORE Class point champions.

The 2006 SCORE Desert Series also included the hunt for the annual Toyota Milestone and $12,000 Toyota True Grit Awards. The prestigious Toyota Milestone Awards presented to every racer who completes every required mile of every race in the 2006 SCORE Desert Series. The $12,000 Toyota True Grit purse is split among the SCORE season point champions who are also Toyota Milestone award winners in several non-factory-backed classes. A total of 17 racers won Toyota Milestone Awards and three of them will split the Toyota True Grit purse.
