March 10 in Mexico

From 15 States, Mexico, Canada, England, Italy, New Zealand;
Race-record 366 entries for 21st Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250

Round 2 of the SCORE Desert Series--36 SCORE Trophy-Trucks,
39 in Class 1, 28 in Class 1-2/1600, 25 in SCORE Lite

LOS ANGELES—No longer that ‘our little secret’ spring break desert race in Mexico, the 21st Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 on March 10 has erupted into one of the top races in the world, attracting a race-record field of 66 entries, to date, from 15 U.S. States, Mexico, Canada, England, Italy and New Zealand.

Round 2 of the six-race 2007 SCORE Desert Series, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series, will be held March 10 in the quaint and picturesque fishing village of San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico.

And while it may be quaint, San Felipe will be anything but sleepy during race week as tens of thousands of ‘adult spring racers’ head South down the majestic Baja California peninsula. The stage is clearly set for a classic desert duel alongside the peaceful azure waters of the Sea of Cortez, 120 miles South of the U.S. border at Calexico, Calif.

“This is remarkable, a testament to how prominent SCORE desert racing is in the world of motorsports,” said Cameron Steele, an action-sports television announcer and SCORE regular who has entered in three classes in San Felipe. “I’ve competed in this event many times and I came down here as a kid when my dad raced, and I have never seen the kind of excitement I have this year. The Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 is the shortest of the three SCORE races held annually in Mexico, but the course is just as rugged as the longer ones, with no time to rest. It’s always been a very good race, now it will become one for the ages.”

Starting its third decade as the ‘baby Baja brother’ to it’s older and more well-known Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 and Tecate SCORE Baja 500 siblings, the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 is now ready to enhance its own significant name in the incredible in storied 34-year history of SCORE Baja racing.

As racers continue pre-running the course, setting up pit locations and finalizing race strategies along the 201.3-mile course, a race-record of nearly 380 entries are expected to compete in 27 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes. The green flag will drop at 6 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed by the car and truck classes three hours later at approximately 10 a.m.

The race will be webcast live with video and audio on the SCORE International website at www.score-international.com, with production provided by Digital 1 Unlimited in association with SCORE Television partner Aura360.

The start and finish line area for the extended loop, point-to-point course will once again be the landmark San Felipe arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. All vehicles will have a 9-hour time limit in the elapsed time race and vehicles will start in 30-second intervals.

To date, a race-record of 366 official entries from 15 States and six countries have officially entered the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, led by the unlimited Class 1 with 39, the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division with 36, Class 1-2/1600 with 28, SCORE Lite with 28, Class 10 with 22 and Class 22 with 16. So far, 217 of the entries are cars or trucks and 149 are either motorcycles or ATVs. Late registration will be accepted up until race morning, virtually guaranteeing a final starting grid of more than 350 for the first time in the colorful 20-year history of the popular race. The previous entry record of 362 set last year and last year’s 341 starters were the most in the event’s history.

Steele, 38, an ESPN action-sports announcer from San Clemente, Calif., has entered in three classes for San Felipe. Steele drives the Desert Assassins No. 16 Ford F-150 in SCORE Trophy-Truck.

Steele, whose wife Heidi Steele is a SCORE regular in Class 7SX in a Ford Ranger, will ride a Suzuki DRZ450 in Class 22 and a Desert Assassin-VW in SCORE Lite.

Pre-race festivities at the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 will include the colorful SCORE Midway and tech inspection on the Malecon beachfront in downtown alongside the azure waters of the Sea of Cortez from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday (March 9).

At 9 p.m. on Saturday (March 10), the awards celebration will be held in front of The Beachcomber Night Club on the Malecon.
The 2007 SCORE Desert Series also includes the chase for the $75,000 Kartek Off-Road contingency bonus to be awarded to several 2007 SCORE Class point champions along with the run for the $12,000 Toyota True Grit and Toyota Milestone Awards.
