WHAT: 40th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 desert race Final event of the six-race 2007 SCORE Desert Series WHEN: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, November 11-16, 2007 WHERE: Ensenada-Baja California, Mexico (65 miles south of U.S./Mexico Border) to Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico WHO: Nearly 450 entries from 43 U.S. States, and 16 countries, competing in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs COURSE: TOTAL MILEAGE: 1,296.39 miles (10 checkpoints plus the finish line). Starts on Blvd. Costero, adjacent to the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in Ensenada, finishing at Campos de Futbol “Yenecamu” soccer fields in Cabo San Lucas. Starting on the Pacific Ocean side of the Baja California peninsula, the course west to Ojos Negros then southeast to the Valle de Trinidad (rm 110.98) back southwest to climb up through Mike’s Sky Rancho, down by Rancho El Coyote (rm 155.72) continuing southwest to Santo Domingo and a long loop southward to near El Rosario (rm 306.21). From there the course heads southeast and onto Highway 1 at Guayaquil (rm 368.60) for a 60-mile run on the highway before turning of east (rm 428.91) to head to the famous Coco’s Corner (rm 441.92) heading south along the Sea of Cortez to Bahia de Los Angeles (rm 519.09), looping southwesterly by El Arco (rm 607.92) down to another pavement run on Hway 1 to San Ignacio (rm 695.15). From there the course heads directl back to the Pacific Ocean at El Datil, joining the pavement at San Juanico (rm 800.29) for another 34 miles Southeast to just above Loreto (rm 867.59) and then down through Loreto before cutting back across the peninsula to complete the backwards ‘C’ Loop to above Ciud Insurgentes and back to the Pacific Ocean (rm 1,015.03). The rest of the magnificent course hugs the Pacific Ocean shoreline down past Santa Rita then to Tepetate and down to Todos Santos (rm 1,243.47) near El Refugio. The final run past ranchos and through washes with many turns and caution areas to the finish line in Cabo San Lucas. This year’s race course will feature 10 outlying checkpoints where each vehicle is required to quickly stop before continuing on. HISTORY OF START/FINISH: In the 40-year history of the SCORE Baja 1000, this will be the 33rd time the race has started in Ensenada and the second time it has finished in Cabo San Lucas. It has also started three times in Mexicali (1972, 1993, 1994), twice in Tijuana (1967, 1995) and once each in Santo Tomas (1998) and Ojos Negro (1999). The only other time this race ended in Cabo San Lucas was 2000. TIRE STREAK: BFGoodrich Tires, long a staple in desert racing, had an amazing streak of 20 consecutive overall 4-wheel vehicle winners broken lin 2006 by Toyo Tires. ENGINE WINNERS: In 4-wheel vehicle competition, VW motors have produced 12 overall winners, followed by Ford with 11, Chevy with 10, Porsche with 3, Toyota with 2, and Dodge with 1. CHASSIS WINNERS: Among 4-wheel vehicles, Chenowth has produced the chassis for 10 overall winners, followed by Ford with 9, Chevy with 6, Toyota, Funco, Raceco, Jimco and Smithbuilt with 2 each and Miller, Hi-Jumper, Dodge, and Meyers Manx with 1 each. MOTORCYCLE WINNERS: In motorcycle competition, Honda leads with 17 overall victories, followed by Husqvarna with 11, Kawasaki with 9 and Yamaha with 2. SCORE GPS DATA LOGGERS: Continuing to help increase safety, verify route and speed, SCORE is requiring the mandatory use SCORE GPS data loggers in ALL classes. THEY JUST KEEP ON GOING, AND GOING...: When veterans Rod Hall and Ron Bishop strap on their racing helmets and take the green flag, they will keep their incredible streaks alive of being the only two racers who have competed in all 39 SCORE Baja 1000 races. Hall, who will turn 70 on Nov. 22, will drive in Stock Mini. Bishop, 63, is the only individual who has run all 39 races on a motorcycle. This year, Bishop is the rider of record on No. 16x in Class 22. Hall is the all-time winningest racer in this event with 18 class wins and Bishop has one class win and is a member of the AMA Hall of Fame. STREAKERS: Steve Hengeveld has won five consecutive overall motorcycle titles. He is racing on the No. 1x Honda CRF450X this year with Robby Bell, Kendall Norman and Johnny Campbell. Donald and Kenneth Moss have won Class 3 for five straight years, and Larry Roeseler/Troy Herbst and teamed up to win the unlimited Class 3 for three consecutive years. Jim O’Neal, an age-group motorcycle rider, also has put together teams of riders who have five class wins in the last three years, including and amazing three last year (Class 40, Class 50 and Class 60). With two straight class wins are: Josh Hall (Stock Full) and Chris Bowman (Class 5). TIGHT OVERALL POINTS: SCORE points are determined both on final finishing position and number of vehicles which started the race within the individual class. After five events, just 43 points separate the top 10 SCORE point leaders for 2007. The team of Mark Post/Rob MacCachren have earned 359 points to lead the SCORE overall points and score Trophy-Truck as well in their No. 3 Riviera Racing Ford F-150. In what has developed into one of tightest overall point battles in SCORE history, second in overall and in SCORE Trophy-Truck points is B.J. Baldwin (Chevy Silverado-358), while third overall and in SCORE Trophy-Truck is Garron Cadiente (Ford F-150—338). Fourth overall is Class 1-2/1600 point leader Dave Caspino (Lothringer-VW—334 while tied for fifth overall with 332 points are the teams of Larry Ragland/Brian Collins (fourth in SCORE Trophy-Truck, Dodge Ram2500) and brothers Billy and Dave Gasper, who lead Class 1 in a Porter Chevy. KARTEK BONUS:The 2007 SCORE Desert Series includes chase for the $75,000 Kartek Off-Road contingency bonus to be awarded to several qualified 2007 SCORE Class point champions. TOYOTA AWARDS:The 2007 SCORE Desert Series also involves the hunt for the 22nd annual Toyota Milestone and $12,000 Toyota True Grit Awards. The prestigious Toyota Milestone Awards are presented to every racer who completes every required mile of every race in the 2007 SCORE Desert Series. The $12,000 Toyota True Grit purse is split among the SCORE season point champions who are also Toyota Milestone award winners in several non-factory-backed classes. A total of 24 drivers are still eligible for Toyota Milestone awards and 10 of those are still in the hunt for class titles and an equal share of the Toyota True Grit purse. $40,000 Volkswagen Contingency Bonus Volkswagen of America, in honor of the 40th anniversary of this race, has posted a special $40,000 cash contingency purse, spread out among the top finishers in all car and truck classes that allow VW-powered vehicles or are solely VW classes. SCORE TROPHY-TRUCKS: An extremely talented field of 32 SCORE Trophy-Trucks are entered to date. The marquee SCORE racing division featuring 800-horsepower unlimited production trucks includes cross-over drivers in addition to the talented field of regulars and a very close point’s race for the season championship. Nine of 13 previous season point champions are entered and 68 of 83 SCORE Trophy-Truck race winners are represented as well along with eight of the previous 13 SCORE Trophy-Truck winners in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. Las Vegas brothers Ed and Tim Herbst are the winningest team in the history of the class with 11 race wins in the No. 19 Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford F-150, while second is Larry Ragland, Cave Creek, Ariz., with 10. Ragland is again racing with veteran Brian Collins of Las Vegas, who has four wins in the No. 12 Collins Motorsports Chevy Silverado. Returning as defending race champions are Robby Gordon (No. 71 Chevy Silverado) and No. 31 Andy McMillin (No. 31 Chevy Silverado) and 2006 season point champion B.J. Baldwin (No. 1 Chevy Silverado). MAN OF TRIPLE-STEELE: Noted TV sports announcer Cameron Steele, San Clemente, Calif., is a second-generation desert racer who is attempting a triple again this year, one in SCORE Trophy-Truck, one in SCORE Lite, and one in Class 22. He is regular in SCORE Trophy-Truck, in the No. 16 Desert Assassins Cadillac Escalade, the No. 1249 Desert Assassin-VW in SCORE Lite and will lead his own team on the No. 23x Honda XR650R motorcycle in Class 22. On the airwaves, Steele is an announcer for Supercross, X-Games, and the Champ Car World Series. Steele probably talks in his sleep. They have all been rider of record at least once. WINNINGEST FAMILY: While there are many families with lots of combined class wins, none have more than the Hall family of Reno, Nev., which has a total of 26 class wins. Led by dad Rod Hall’s race-record 18 class wins, his son Chad has five and oldest son Josh has three. This year, Team Hummer will have Rod Hall in Stock Mini and Chad and Josh Hall will drive separate Hummers in Stock Full. TWO-TIMERS: This race always has a few ‘bravehearts’ who enter in two classes, hoping for double wins. Among those this year are: Gus Vildosola and Gus Vildosola Jr. (SCORE Trophy-Truck No. 4 and Protruck No. 200), Malcolm Smith (303x in Class 30 and No. 867 Stock Full), J.N. Roberts (303x Class 30 and 601x in Class 60), Jim O’Neal (Class 30 No. 302x and Class 50 No. 500x) and John Crowley (Sportsman ATV No. 54a and Sportsman UTV No. 1803). Of note, Rod Hall and his sons Josh and Chad are all listed on each other’s Hummers in the Stock Mini and SCORE Full classes. It is possible that one or more may drive in two of the vehicles, but unlikely any would drive in all three. Smith and Roberts won the first overall motorcycle title in 1967 and will ride together again this year in Class 30 for the RacingForLife.org team with proceeds to the Malcolm Smith Motorsports Foundation, the Scleroderma Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. BACK TO THEIR ROOTS: Besides Robby Gordon (NASCAR; SCORE Trophy-Truck) among the other racers returning to their desert racing roots are Brendan Gaughan (NASCAR Truck Series, SCORE Class 1) and Brian Ickler (NASCAR Grand National West Series, SCORE Trophy-Truck). BAJA CHAMPS-OVERALL: Entered in this year’s event are 23 racers who have combined for 46 overall wins in either the 4-wheel or motorycle divisions. The leaders are: Larry Roeseler, 12, (10 on a motorcycle and the last two years in a car); Johnny Campbell has with nine (all on a motorcycle), Steve Hengeveld with six including five straight (all on a motorcycle). Malcolm Smith has five overalls (two in m/c and three in 4-wheel) and with five overall wins each in the 4-wheel division are Mark McMillin and Larry Ragland. BAJA CHAMPS-BY CLASS: Entered in this year’s event are 136 racers who have combined for incredible 347 class wins. The leaders in multiple class wins entered this year are: Rod Hall with 18 (first overall), Larry Roeseler with 15 (tied for second overall), Chris Haines with 12 (fourth overall), Jack Johnson with 11 (fifth overall), Johnny Campbell, Eric Solorzano and Craig Adams each with 9 (tied for sixth), Mark McMillin and Malcolm Smith, with 8 each (tied for 11th) and Steve Hengeveld and Ted Hunnicutt Jr. each with 7 (tied for 16th). SCORE IronRiders: (as of 11/1/07) Nearly two dozen motorcycle riders and two ATV riders will attempt to run the race solo, with no co-riders. If they succeed, they will each receive one of the prestigious SOCRE IronRider awards. FAMILY TIES: Desert racing has always been about family teams and this year’s Tecate SCORE Baja1000 is a prime example of that fact. This year’s starting grid currently includes 139 brothers racing together and 27 racing separately. The race also has 67 fathers racing with their 75 sons and 17 fathers whose 21 sons are racing in separate vehicles. There are also seven husband/wife teams competing together and two separately. THIRD GENERATION: There will be a number of third generation desert racers in the field. Leading the way will be two members of the legendary McMillin Racing team. Andy McMillin, will race SCORE Trophy-Truck with his father Scott and Daniel McMillin, whose father Mark will be a favorite again in Class 1, will race in Class 1-2/1600.
