WSORR INNOVATES WITH "SAFE BANNER SYSTEM" AT OWATONNA OPENER
(05/13/07)
CRANDON, Wis. – “Safety Fast” is a Lucas Oil World Series of
Off-Road Racing program aimed at developing and utilizing
innovations to make the sport safer. With that in mind, WSORR has
designed and produced a limited number of proprietary on-track
banner displays eliminating the use of traditional “banner stakes”.
The new system will be used for the first time during the Series
opener in Owatonna, Minn.
Custom manufactured with flexible plastic slide-in banners, the new
system is safer than the traditional method of mounting promotional
and SPEED TV banners to steel stakes.
“We are trying to eliminate any potential hazards to drivers during
a roll or collision and our new proprietary banner system is a
positive move in that direction,” said Cliff Flannery, vice
president, WSORR and brainchild behind the new deployment system.
WSORR received input from track promoters, racers, sponsors and TV
field production in creating the new system.
“We have made the system robust enough to withstand 30 mph winds,
yet they will crush and flatten easily if an off-road race vehicle
rolls or crashes into the banner deployment system,” he said.
WSORR places an enormous emphasis on the safety of participants. “We
have been running the finest and safest off-road races for 38 years
and it was time for us to again innovate and lead the way to develop
even safer race conditions for drivers,” said Flannery.
The system was first extensively tested and the first scheduled use
is on track infields, where off-road racing action can be hot and
heavy.
“Our slogan is ‘WSORR: Safety Fast’,” said Flannery. “And we will
continue to be leaders and look at methods to make the sport safer
for participants, track workers, media covering the event and fans.
Off-road racing is a high-speed, bumping and banging event and like
all motorsports, poses certain safety risks, but we are constantly
looking at ways to reduce those risks,” he said.
First use for the new proprietary WSORR banner deployment system
will be at the May 19-20 WSORR season opener in Owatonna, Minn.
