Veteran Off-Road TV Journalist Joins
WSORR
-
-
CRANDON, WI -- Longtime off-road
television host and producer Steve Weiss has been named Director of
Communications and Multi-media for the Lucas Oil World Series of
Off-Road Racing (WSORR). Weiss has been covering off-road races for
more than 20 years as a reporter, host and color analyst for ESPN, TNN
(now SPIKE), Prime Sports, and the Outdoor Life Network.
-
-
Weiss worked alongside another
motorsports veteran journalist, Dave Despain, for ESPN's coverage of
desert off-road race events in the mid-1990's, including the world
famous SCORE Baja 1000. At the time, he was also the off-road
correspondent for the ESPN SPEEDWEEK program hosted by Bob Jenkins.
-
-
More recently, he was the producer and
host of "The Ivan Stewart Protruck Race Series" on Outdoor Life
Network. Those shows received critical acclaim, winning a national
Telly Award for excellence in cable sports programming. Weiss has
reported on NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula One, NHRA, Pikes Peak Hill Climbs,
and the Bonneville Salt Flats Land Speed Time Trials.
-
-
"It's Steve's professionalism and
experience we are excited about here at the World Series," said Doug
Davis, general manager, WSORR. "He has truly seen it all and he has an
established relationship with many of the racers, sponsors, and
promoters of our sport -- both East and West. When you talk with them,
there is one common description of Steve they share -- respect for his
integrity. It's just one more example of how we are assembling the
best and most capable individuals available in our motorsports community
for our WSORR team," Davis added. "Steve is certainly an asset in front
of the camera and he knows what goes on behind one as well."
-
-
Weiss will handle public relations,
promotional, and communication duties, developing a comprehensive plan
to integrate the multi-media aspects of both electronic and print media
for WSORR. In that effort, he will oversee the series website.
-
-
"It will be an exciting challenge to
help launch this effort," said Weiss. "Today's fast-paced world
includes the internet, TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, satellites,
cell phones and other emerging technologies all part of the media
picture. There are more opportunities than ever before to allow
off-road fans multiple ways to follow exciting World Series of Off-Road
Racing action and we will utilize all of them. The World Series has the
sport's greatest drivers and unmatched fender-to-fender race action that
will attract many new fans to the sport across the country," Weiss
remarked. "We just have to show it to them."
-
-
“We are putting a huge emphasis on the
promotional effort of the Lucas Oil World Series of Off-Road Racing,”
said Davis. “Short course racing needs to be promoted consistently
across the board for each and every event and that is something we will
concentrate on in 2007," he said. "We intend to grow the fan base around
the country with the usual hard work and some exciting new promotional
techniques. World Series drivers, sponsors, fans and tracks are going
to be excited and proud to be a part of the WSORR story and Steve is
going to make sure that story is delivered,” added Davis.
-
-
Weiss is a 1979 graduate of Colorado
State University with a Television and Radio Production degree. He has
worked as a television anchor and reporter for stations in Denver, CO,
Las Vegas, NV, Shreveport, LA and Pocatello, ID. He and his wife Susie
currently reside just outside the metro Denver area where he owns and
operates his own production company Clubhouse Productions, Inc.,
providing marketing and training tapes for a number of large
corporations in addition to producing sports television programs.
-
-
“I’m excited to hit the road and get out
there and show people what the World Series of Off-Road Racing has to
offer,” said Weiss. “We will renew the promotional effort in
established venues like Crandon and Bark River and I look forward to the
opportunities that await us in new venues of the World Series. Track
promoters and sponsors are going to find us to be an enthusiastic and
energetic partner and media outlets will discover that our
straightforward and comprehensive approach will deliver them just what
they need to do their jobs. Doug Davis has an outstanding reputation
for the success he’s had in promoting Crandon Raceway and you will see
that same blueprint applied series-wide,” he added.
