bumpracer.com - WSORR TOUR 2007 Opener - Owatonna, MN
-
-
Saturday
- The
beautiful late spring weather continued, as WSORR officials and
competitors readied themselves for Round 1 of the TOUR 2007. By late
morning, the covered grandstand was almost filled and the open
bleachers were filling in as well. All was left was to get the
drivers on the track. Here's a quick rundown on the first round of
racing for the Lucas Oil World Series of Off-Road Racing Tour 2007.

WSORR Round 1
-
-
Super Stock Truck
-
Eight Super Stock Trucks took the start with Ben Wandasega #297,
grabbing the holeshot with Dan Baudoux #217, right behind, as Don
Williams #277, lined up in third. The first half of the race,
Baudoux and Wandasega were pulling away from Williams as Wandasega
fought off Baudoux, lap after lap. At the finish Wandasega
came home first, Baudoux second, and race promoter, Don Williams
third.

1600 Light Buggy
- The
largest field of the weekend saw twenty-nine buggies take the green
flag. Josh Hintz #116, grabbed the early lead, but on lap 3,
Jamie Kleikamp #125,grabbed the lead, and never looked back. Hintz
dropped out with a broken transmission, allowing Wesley Freshse #199
into second and Todd Lemke #109 up to third. The top three stayed in
that order all the way to the finish.

-
Formula 4x4
- This
WSORR division has been a fan favorite at Crandon and Bark River for
several years. For 2007 WSORR made this group part of the Sportsman
Tour. The vehicle is very similar to desert racing SCORE Class 3. As
the dozen old school trucks headed for turn one, Jerry Conrad #497
came out in the lead.
- On
lap 4, second place Larry Maciosek #451 made contact with the
leader, sending Conrad's Bronco end over end. The emergency workers
had to block the track getting to Conrad, creating a red flag stop
of the race. Immediately after the restart, new leader Maciosek was
given a black flag penalty, for the contact with Conrad.
- Then
there was some confusion with the drivers, as new leader Bob Sayers
#432, pulled off the track, thinking he has won the race. After
about twenty seconds, Sayers got back on track, and had three laps
to chase down leader Dave Maih #475. On the final lap, the local
Minnesota native made the pass and took the top prize as Dave Maih
in his Early Bronco finished second.

-
1600 Buggy
- The
most competitive class in the Lucas Oil World Series of Off-Road
Racing series, had fourteen buggies take the green flag. Quickly the
traditional front runners got to the front of the line. John
Fitzgerald #312 and Michael Seefeldt #301 battled much of the race
for the lead as Mark Steinhardt #331, Terry Fitzgerald #311, and
Brad Erickson #308 battled for the third spot. At the flag it was
1st - Michael Seefeldt, 2nd - John Fitzgerald, 3rd - Mark
Steinhardt, 4th Brad Erickson, 5th Terry Fitzgerald.
-
-
Stock Truck
- The
ten truck field saw Scott Beachamp #820, grab the lead and never was
challenged. Al Konitzer #863 finished second and Don Demeny #885,
came home third.
- Just
past halfway Eric Ruppel #837, got the crowd on their feet as
he was trying to pass Demeny for third, when Ruppel put his Ford on
it front bumper two laps in a row going through the whoops in the
field. Unfortunately, the abuse ended Ruppel's day early.
-
-
Super Buggy
- Gary
Nierop #904, grabbed the early lead with Aaron Hawley #924, in close
pursuit. Hawley gets by for the lead as the front suspension on
Nierop's buggy collapsed. This gave to win to Hawley, as Tim
Lemons #902, finishes second, and Adam Guberud #928, charged through
the field to take the final spot on the podium.
- The
race saw Scott Schwalbe and Luke Zoetmulder go end over end in two
separate incidents. Scott and Luke walked away sore, but went to
work immediately, to get their rides ready for Sunday.
-
-
PRO 4x4
- The
first PRO race of the weekend saw Mike Oberg #71, chase down Kent
Brasho #8 to take the lead on lap three. At the finish it was 1st -
Mike Oberg, 2nd Kent Brasho, and 3rd Al Drews.
- This
was Oberg's first race in a Pro 4x4, as he was driving one of the
Douglas Motorsports as Scott was competing in a similar prepared
truck on the West Coast.
-
-
PRO LIGHT
-
Fourteen trucks took the green, with Chad Hord #9, grabbing the
lead. On lap 2, the leader, Hord, endos ending his day. This put
Jeff Kincaid in the lead. The next three trucks battled much of the
race. At the finish it was 1st - Jeff Kincaid #1, 2nd - former
motocross, ATV, and Mickey Thompson star, Marty Hart #15, 3rd - Lee
O'Donnell #23, 4th - Randy Eller #11, 5th - Dan Vanden Huvel #77,
and 6th - Steven Federico #24.
- This
was the most competitive race of the day, as the top 10 trucks ran
strong. Veteran Steven Federico came out of the first turn last,
well behind the next truck, battled all day, and came home sixth.
-
-
PRO 2WD
- This
field saw a fierce battle the first half of the race between Mike
Oberg #80, Scott Taylor #8, Kevin Probst #99 and Evan Evans #4. At
one point all four competitors all had a turn at the lead. About lap
8, Taylor spins at speed going through the chicane, giving Evans the
lead. Somehow Taylor misses the concrete wall, and takes over
second place. Then moments later, Evans had a transmission problem
putting Taylor back out front. At the checkered flag it was Scott
Taylor -1st, Mike Oberg - 2nd, Kevin Probst - 3rd, and Evan Evans -
4th.

- As
the racing concluded, the rain clouds moved in, and moisture found
its way to the Steele County Fairgrounds. Hopefully the rain
will pass through southeastern Minnesota to give the fans and
