Flying Dutchman Brings Maxxis
First Win, Takes Sole Possession of PRO-2WD Lead
Appleton, WI (July 15, 2008) - Dan Vanden Heuvel and his Maxxis Tire
backed Chevrolet Silverado went into the weekend tied with Kevin
Probst for the WSORR PRO-2WD point’s lead. Dan was looking to
continue his streak of podium finishes in an effort to put Kevin and
the rest of the PRO-2WD competition in the rearview mirror.
The race track at Bark River International Raceway is a natural
terrain course that is fast, yet technical and has always developed
multiple race lines throughout its layout. The weather was mostly
sunny, temperatures in the 70’s, with a stiff 20+mph west wind,
which would play havoc with much of the PRO-2WD racers.
Saturday Round V
The downhill land rush start saw everyone make it through the first
corner relatively damage free. Dan and his #77 Maxxis Tire Chevrolet
came through in the lead, with #10 Waldvogel in second and #99
Probst in third.
As the PRO-2WD field flew their way over the infamous hill for the
first time, the Flying Dutchman really earned his name, as his Chevy
Silverado flew nearly two hundred feet, before landing near the
bottom of the “Traxxis Fly-Off.”
During the entire ten lap feature Dan ran unchallenged for his first
PRO-2WD win, and his fifth consecutive podium finish of the year.
This also was the first PRO full size truck win for a Maxxis Tire
equipped truck in any short course race series in the country.
“This is awesome,” noted Dan Vanden Heuvel. “Dan Jr. came up with a
tire groove that really made these brand new Maxxis Tires work
perfect. I had forward traction and plenty of side bite. We got the
holeshot and never looked back. After a few laps, we got into a
comfortable pace, then with three laps to go, I lost radio contact.
I saw Evan behind me, but I didn’t know where Kevin was. So I put
the hammer down just make sure nobody could catch me. Only
afterwards did I realize Probst dropped out. Heck, I didn’t even use
a single tearoff.”
Overnight, Dan and his crew performed the usual between rounds
service. The only change made to the truck was the addition of vents
in the front fenders of the truck, to relieve the buildup of air
pressure under the hood while sailing off the “infamous” hill.
Sunday’s forecast called for even stronger west winds.
Sunday Round VI
The start had Dan and his #77 Silverado come out the first turn in
second place. The first seven laps a terrific battle took place
between #21 Hoek, #5 Evans, and Dan Vanden Heuvel. The three trucks
swapped positions back and forth until lap seven, when Dan had to
retire. The contact between the trucks eventually punctured the
right rear tire. Officially the #77 finished eighth.
After six rounds of racing Dan Vanden Heuvel is in sole possession
of the Lucas Oil WSORR PRO-2WD championship.
Afterwards, Dan Vanden Heuvel commented; “We’re out here having a
blast. We are competing against the best and right now we are on
top. There’s a ton of racing to go, and the war has just begun.”
Dan wasn’t the only winner in the family at Bark River, his son Mike
went four for four, as he won the Single Buggy and 1600 Buggy
divisions, on Saturday and Sunday. Congratulations to Mike Vanden
Heuvel.
Next race for the Flying Dutchman Off-Road Race Team is under the
lights at the Oshkosh Speedzone, July 25-26 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
