Waldvogel Lands on the Podium in WSORR Pro-2WD™ Season Opener
Places 3rd Driving Bendix Brakes-Sponsored Truck
June 2nd, 2008 (Fond du Lac, WI)  - The WSORR (World Series of Off-Road Racing) traveled south to the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri, over the past weekend to kick off the 2008 season. The schedule was planned to run one round of racing on Saturday evening under the lights and another on Sunday afternoon.
The Waldvogel Off-Road team pulled into the track on Friday in preparation for the first test session that evening.  This year is the rookie season for driver Dave Waldvogel in the WSORR Pro-2WD division.  In 2007, Waldvogel recorded three wins and eight podium finishes in the WSORR SRT Super Truck division, which utilizes essentially the same chassis, but has a restricted cylinder head and carburetor.  The next step up in competition is to the Pro-2wd class, with the main difference being about 150-200 horsepower. The Pro-2WD class is the pinnacle of two-wheel-drive short-course off-road racing.  Dave will now be competing against some of the best in the business, and the entire team knew that the wins would not come as easily as they have in previous years.
After the test session on Friday, Dave, his dad (and crew chief) Marty studied film of the test session, and on Saturday morning adjustments were made to the Fox Shox, along with some spring adjustments, to try and dial in a hot setup for the short, technical Wheatland track. The pre-race practice session on Saturday afternoon looked much better, with Dave turning the 3rd fastest lap of the weekend in the Pro-2WD class.  Mother Nature then stepped in, dropping monsoon-like rains on the track throughout the late afternoon and into the evening.  The rain and lightning stopped, and the first race of the schedule slopped their way around the track.  By the time the second race got going, the rain returned, and the race was postponed due to safety concerns.  It is pretty rare that an off-road race is called off due to weather. This time it was due to the fact that the safety vehicles could not maneuver on the track, and there were high winds, lightning, and minimal visibility.  All in all, it made for a long evening as Dave patiently awaited his chance to get the Bendix®/Toyo Tires Pro-2WD truck on the track for the first time.  The decision was to run a double-round of racing on Sunday.
On Sunday, the weather cooperated, and Dave took the starting grid for round one.  During lap one, Dave opted to ensure survival of the truck, checking-up to avoid a nasty rollover by Kevin Probst.  A few competitors got past Dave during the confusion, and he found himself in the 5th position for the first few laps of the event.  Dave began to flex the muscle of his new Pro-2WD, moving all the way up to 2nd place behind Carl Renezeder with only two laps remaining.  Coming to the white flag, Dave lost the 2nd position to Dan VandenHeuvel after sliding wide in the tight finish line corner. Dave was faster than Dan through certain portions of the track, and on the last lap again made the pass for 2nd coming into the final corner. The truck pushed wide again, however, allowing the veteran driver VandenHeuvel to slide by for 2nd, with Dave finishing closely behind in 3rd.  Carl Renezeder took the win in his Lucas Oil Ford.
Round two was to be held around 4 hours later. With minimal damage to the truck, the Waldvogel crew washed the truck off and serviced the truck for another round of racing.  During round four, Dave worked his way up to the 4th position by around the midpoint of the race. Dave slowly began to pull closer to the 3rd position truck. With around three laps remaining, a failed radiator fan caused the water temperature gauge to slowly rise, and Dave took care to bring the truck home in one piece, finishing in the 4th position.
After the races, Dave commented, “I had a lot of fun driving this Bendix® Brakes hot rod today…We are thrilled to get onto the podium in Pro-2WD in only our first weekend of competition.  Overall the truck ran as well as I could’ve hoped for, and we learned a ton about competing in the Pro-2WD class.”
Dave finds himself in 3rd place in the WSORR Pro-2WD point standings after the first two rounds of competition.  The next event will be held at the Crandon International Off-Road Raceway “The Big House” of Off-Road, in Crandon, Wisconsin, on June 21st & 22nd.  Dave has been known to fare well at the Crandon track, with four wins over the past two seasons in various classes.  For detailed coverage of the entire event, including highlight videos and point standings, visit www.wsorr.com .
